Homeschool Basics

This bulletin explains how to homeschool in Colorado, specifically for families in District 11. To homeschool, you need to send a Notice of Intent (NOI) to a Colorado school district each year. If your child has been absent a lot from school before, you also need to share what you plan to teach. Parents do not need a teaching license to homeschool. Homeschooling requires about 172 days of teaching each year, with lessons covering reading, writing, speaking, math, history, civics, literature, and science. After 7th grade, teaching the U.S. Constitution is also required. Parents must keep records of attendance, shots, and test results. These records can be asked for by the school district if they think the homeschooling isn't following the rules. Homeschooled students can join school sports and activities, but must follow the same rules as other students. District 11 does not provide lesson plans or materials, so parents must find and buy these themselves. The district also no longer provides testing services; parents need to find private testers for their children in 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grades.
